A Tale of Five Gamers - AOS Nurgle army

Recently some friends from work and I decided to start some new armies and in order to increase the motivation, we are doing it as a "Tale of Four Gamers" type thing.

We have started with a three month timeline to assemble and paint a HQ and 2 troops for our chosen armies.

I have decided on a Nurgle army for Age of Sigmar and a Genestealer cult army for 40K.

I have so far assembled the HQ and troops for Nurgle and the HQ for Genestealers cults.

Ive also painted a test mini for the nurgle army and decided on a paint scheme. the long haul batch painting starts tonight.

Black or White... The everlasting question...

Hi everybody,

Its been forever since I updated this blog... and its been equally as long since I did any painting... However I have started picking up the brush again and have done a little work on the savage orcs.

I have been using facebook to get some inspiration, liking a large number of other miniature painting artists and I am forever in awe of the levels of skill out there. Something that I would love to be able to do, however I am no where near that standard YET! I emphasize the word YET, because as with everything in life, practice makes perfect. I have improved a lot in the last 12 months with my painting and there is only more improvements coming.

Anyway, my question

for today is Black or White, Do you undercoat with black (or some other dark colour) or white (or some other light colour)? As someone who has traditionally collected Eldar and Orks and Imperial Guard for 40K, I have always undercoated in white. This allows for brighter colours on a traditionally colourful army.

However since I picked up the brush again in 2011, I have only collected Warhammer Fantasy. Now as you can see from the photos, the Orcs work well with the white undercoat. However, I recently put in an order for the new Dwarfs that GW have released and with all that shiny dwarvish metal and rock, I am anticipating that white undercoat may not be an ideal base.

I might grab some other old minis and experiment with black undercoat. Or have a look at some other colour undercoats from other suppliers. I tried the brown undercoat on a skaven army that I bought way back when, but I dont think that the conditions were ideal for it and it just left a chalky residue on the rats.

So if you could all provide some insight into the undercoating process that any one else uses or even just some tips, please feel free to comment.

Thanks all and happy painting.

Hobby Block (Like writers block but cooler)

I have not done any painting for about 2 weeks... Its driving me crazy. But I just cant bring myself to sit down at my painting table and put brush to plastic.

I have been looking at various other blogs to try and get some inspiration, I came across a post from a painter about hobby block. I believe that I am a terminal sufferer of hobby block. I always have grandios ideas about painting/converting/modelling. I spend massive amounts of money buying Warhammer minis (last count was $6500 this year) I have 6 different FULL armies. The smallest is 2000 pt, the largest (My empire army) is 6500 points. All unpainted of course.

This has resulted in me sitting in the loungeroom for the past few weeks slowly rocking back and forth and muttering to myself about the dangers of getting too stuck into GW and painting.

Therefore, in an effort to break the block, I am going to start painting every day! I am going to post something on here every day! Taking inspiration from my mother (of all people) who has her own blog and has done a "Day XXX of a year in my life" type thing, I am going to start a "Day XXX of a year of painting" I want to see if it inspires me to finish all the projects that I am working on, or to at least learn new things.

I am going to start this process on the 01st of November.

Stay tuned.

Target Identified Season 1.1: Supporter Edition First Impressions

Well... It finally arrived. you may remember a few weeks back I mentioned a DVD tutorial pack that I ordered from Germany. Well, it arrived today! :)

You may also remember me mentioning that calling this a simple DVD Tutorial pack is a gross understatement. The company that develops this pack, www.paintingbuddha.com, are a group of passionate hobbyists, who are one of the few groups I have seen who still understand what it means to paint miniatures as a hobby. When I first started in this hobby back in 1994, collecting Warhammer 40K and painting as best I could, there were a few companies around. The biggest being Games workshop. Who happily shared a lot of painting tips, articles, information and other assorted bits and pieces that inspired me to dive into the hobby.

However, nowadays they have become a money hungry company who are more worried about protecting their intellectual property than supporting the hobby. After researching the painting buddha quite extensively through various blogs and youtube channels, I was really surprised to see a business within this community who are more about the hobby than the $$$. They actually donate 16% of the proceeds of this DVD pack to charity. which is quite awesome. anyway, enough about the company.

The DVD pack is awesome. it comes with a Painting Buddha T Shirt, and some PB stickers.

A personal letter from the creators. As well as a certificate of authenticity, which is numbered. Mine is S156.

For a relatively small box, there is a massive amount of awesome inside. We will start with the DVDs. I have only just opened the box so haven't had a look at these properly. But I will post a review of the contents once I have a look.

The concept of this is pretty cool. The pack includes 2 miniatures, and the artists on the Tutorials take you through a step by step painting guide using a couple of different techniques. The artists are golden demon winning painters and I look forward to seeing what they have to say.

The Miniatures...

They are resin cast. First impressions are good. I cant see any casting defects and they look very well detailed. Should be fun to paint.

5 collector buttons and a magnet...

All up it cost 101euro. Which worked out to $151 AUD. It did take 3 weeks to arrive. but I think it was very much worth it. I guess first impressions are good. Will wait till the weekend to have a look at the DVDs. But Ill post a review once I do.

Started on the carnosaur

I started working on the Carnosaur Body last night. Ive decided on a red scale for the carnosaur. Going to be red/orange/yellow dinosaur and then ill paint the rider in Green for the contrast. Should look good. The work I have done so far has come out really well. Ill take some photos over the next few days and post them up here.

Stay tuned.

Lizardmen are interesting...

I finished assembling the Carnosaur over the weekend and started basecoating the detailed areas of the mini. Specifically all the ropes and bindings hanging off him. I havent really decided on a colour scheme for the actual dinosaur yet.

I am waiting on the delivery of my Bastiladon that I ordered with the Carnosaur but was delayed due to stock levels. So once I receive it I can seriously look at colour schemes. i also have a Stegadon that I will put together soon and I think will look at designing a colour scheme that will work across all three of these big Dinosaur type miniatures.

Ill post some pics over the weekend of the work so far. :)
